# Assign Terminal to Location

> Assign a terminal to a Shopify location — required for payments.

<Warning>
  Without location assignment no terminal can be used for payments. Each terminal must be assigned to exactly one location.

*About 1–2 minutes*

<Steps>
  <Step title="Select terminal">
    Click on the terminal in the terminals list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Optionally check status">
    Click **Status** to fetch current connection, battery level and firmware version.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Assign">
    In the terminals list tap **Assign** (dialog title **Assign terminal**). Choose the Shopify location.
  </Step>

  <Step title="POS Device Mapping (Optional)">
    In the same dialog under **POS Device Mapping (Optional)** choose an iPad. There is no second “Assign POS device” button.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Mark as default">
    If you have multiple terminals at a location: mark the preferred terminal as **default**. This is used when no POS device has a specific terminal assigned.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Assign">
    In the dialog tap **Assign**. The primary action is not Save.
